Classics today (Review of the CD recording with the Dresden String Trio playing the Mozart Divertimento in E flat major KV 563 for violin, viola and violoncello and the string trio in B flat major D581 by Schubert) Although orchestra musicians surely can play in small groups they are not necessarily true chamber musicians. However, the three gentlemen of the Dresden String Trio really form an ensemble which proves to be more than a group of three good musicians. Their version of the great string trio by Mozart allows the listener at every moment to recognise a careful and thoughtful preparation. Their cultivated, yet by no means flat way of playing music keeps a natural balance between spoken articulation and pleasing songlike sound. These are the means to approach this piece of music. Similarly, the adagio, clearly the centrepiece, radiates great warmth by its carefully mixed colours. Yet it shows what the ensemble attaches importance to. Their sensitive and subtle play brings out the high art of music. Maybe the dance pieces could be a little bit more light-hearted, al fresco to a certain extent, than the never rough sounding trio played them. Nevertheless, the listener enjoys the manifold opportunities the Dresden String Trio has to offer.
